Background
The mandate of the initial Taxi Recapitalisation Programme (TRP) dealt solely with the scrapping of an estimated target of 135,000 old minibus taxi vehicles (OTVs) across the country. The overarching objective was to improve on road safety by removing unroadworthy minibus taxis from the road via the scrapping process and facilitating an upgrade in the fleet of new TRP compliant minibus taxi vehicles through a scrapping allowance paid directly to taxi operators. At the close of the TRP in 2018, 72 653 successful scrapping applications had been processed and paid.
A review of the TRP was conducted towards the end of the term resulting in the launch of the RTRP in April 26, 2019. The RTRP introduces key value-add elements to encourage sustainable continuity to the programme.
ANTHUS Services 84 (Pty) Ltd is appointed by the Department of Transport as the technical partner responsible for the implementation of the RTRP.
